Houston Airport System adds Spanish edition

All Weather Terminal cements Port of Kokkola's Finnish First

Europe's largest All Weather Terminal (AWT) has been inaugurated at The Port of Kokkola in Western Finland, ranked among the country's busiest ports and one of the largest along the Gulf of Bothnia.

The new AWT – constructed at a cost of €20m ($26.4m) and the first such facility in Scandinavia – was officially opened at a gala ceremony on January 31, 2005 by Finland's transport Minister Leena Luhtanen (view image). The inauguration was attended by local dignitaries, port customers and port staff along with journalists from the Finnish and international media.

At 132m long, 62m wide and 35m high, the AWT can receive, load and discharge vessels up to 9500dwt at its enclosed dock area which is 125m in length and 25m wide. The terminal is primarily designed to cater for weather-sensitive cargoes (view 6MB Quicktime movie) – timber, metals and general cargo – that make up a high proportion of traffic through Kokkola. It forms part of a pan-European AWT network which also includes the Waterland Terminal at the Port of Amsterdam.

The concept behind the AWT, and the Port's future aspirations, are highlighted in the official 56-page publication Kokkola – a Port for Tomorrow, Today, produced for the Port Authority of Kokkola by specialist transportation publisher Meridian Publications Ltd.

Launched to coincide with the official opening, the publication outlines the AWT's story from inception to completion in high-quality editorial and pictures. Meridian client Bangkok Airways, "Asia's Boutique Airline", has received an Airline Excellence Award in the Skytrax Airline of the Year 2004 survey for its top-flight customer service quality standards.

New Editor-in-Chief Appointed

Business-to-business publisher Meridian Publications Ltd. has appointed aviation specialist writer Graham Newton to head up its aviation division.

Graham is a former editor of the IATA magazine, Airlines International. He has also been editor of airline info tech, a magazine specializing in aviation technology, associate editor of Airport World, official magazine of the Airports Council International, and launch editor of World Gateway, a magazine specializing in airport/destination reports.

Meridian Publications has been awarded the contract to publish the Allsafe® range of Distance Learning Courses for Advanced Food Safety Ltd.

The brand leader in food safety distance learning courses, Allsafe's food hygiene courses have all been certificated by the UK Royal Institute of Public Health. Other products include the HACCP Pack for developing customised GMP, HACCP system and records, food safety signage and employee training aids.

Advanced Food Safety Ltd (AFSL), based in Wigan, north-west England, retails the English-language editions of these courses throughout the UK and Europe, with other language versions marketed through AFSL's associate companies in international markets.

Medway Ports 2004 Handbook Available

The 2004 Edition of the Medway Ports Handbook & Directory has been launched.

Kuwait Airport celebrates 75th Anniversary of Civil Aviation
