KUWAIT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
TERMINAL 2
K
uwait International Airport is continuing to
blaze a trail for air transport in the Gulf region
with the construction of its ground-breaking
new passenger Terminal 2.
Capable of handling up to 13 million passengers a
year on opening – with scope for expansion up to
25 million – the new facility will be situated to the
south of the current terminal.
The design is being undertaken by a consortium
led by Foster+Partners in association with Gulf
Consult, and includes Arup, Netherlands Airports
Company and Parsons Brinckerhoff. The Ministry of
Public Works is overseeing the architectural and
design phases.
The new 140,000m
2
four-level passenger terminal
is designed in a trefoil plan, comprising three sym-
metrical “wings” of aircraft contact gates. The façade
of each wing spans 1.2 kilometres and all three radi-
ate out from a central concourse under a single roof
canopy, with a dramatic 25m-high atrium.
The 60m span roof canopy extends to shade a
vast entrance plaza and is supported by tapering
concrete columns.
Capable of handling up to
13 million passengers a year on
opening – with scope for
expansion up to 25 million –
Terminal 2 will be situated to the
south of the current terminal.
