Também precisamos melhorar imenso a parte do marAs new Executive Managing Director of Cornelder de Mozambique (CdM), you know that the Port has experienced a renaissance in the last decade – how will you use your experience to raise the bar even further? For me, it is almost a return to home. I grew up professionally in the transport system of the Port of Beira and reached the position of Director of the Port of Beira for CFM, then went to the Sena Line before moving to Maputo to join the Board of Directors of CFM.Returning to this house after 16 years away from the Port of Beira, I found it in good condition in terms of personnel, operational productivity and in terms of financial health. I’m joining a strong team of managers and workers at Cornelder and bringing my experience and dedication – together we will endeavour to take our Port to even higher performance levels. What are the first steps to take? The challenge comes from the fact that the Port has evolved and that with the passage of time new technologies have become available and new cargoes have appeared. We want to find solutions to always do better in order to attend to our customers with efficiency and cost effectiveness, while maintaining a safe work environment. With that we will make the Port as well as the Beira Corridor more competitive. For me personally my first steps are to get to know in detail the most urgent of issues facing the company and the Port. What is the Port handling today, particularly CdM?The Port of Beira has evolved considerably. In 2002, for example, we handled only 30,000 TEUs per year while in 2014 we reached over 207,000 TEUs. In terms of general cargo we handled 2.3 million tons last year and besides that we handled nearly 5 million tons of coal from Moatize. There is still room for further growth, but the Corridor needs to improve in some areas outside the direct control of Cornelder such as the railways, managed by CFM, and road transport. We also need to improve on the marine side with issues such as maritime services (pilotage, tugboats) controlled by CFM, the dredging controlled by EMODRAGA and the navigation aids under control of INAHINA.
