Some 42km of the Ressano Garcia line that connects Maputo to the border with South Africa is being upgraded to dual tracks.The improvement is part of CFM’s long-term vision to double the line’s entire 88km length and provide additional capacity for the 3,500-ton trains that carry a range of bulk cargoes for export via the Port of Maputo.Ongoing co-operation with neighbouring rail operators, South Africa’s Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), Eswatini Railways and National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), to ensure Maputo’s principal markets are seamlessly connected, have already borne fruit.In April 2022, the first of many 2,000-ton trains carrying exports of mineral coal from Botswana via Zimbabwe arrived in Maputo at the Matola Coal Terminal.
