The capability to cater for an increasingly diverse range of cargoes is vital to supporting the traffic growth that the port is forecast to handle in the years ahead.MPDC Chrome TerminalBulk minerals are the number one cargo for the Port of Maputo, accounting for more than 92% of total volumes crossing the quays.Certainly, things have never been busier at the port’s specialised Chrome Terminal, a purpose-built facility located behind Berths 6, 7, 8 and 9, which are dedicated to the handling of bulk chrome ore and ferrochrome.Investment by operator, MPDC, has enabled the expansion of the ferro slab footprint and dedicated rail sidings that will unlock the potential for growth in rail cargo and deliver more balanced volumes between rail and road movements. Currently, just 27% of cargo arrives by train.The Chrome Terminal comprises open slabs with capacity for 9.2 million tons per annum. Optimised for efficiency, all the slabs have high separating walls to enable effective segregation of specific products and allow stockpiles to be stacked higher, thus creating extra capacity within the same footprint.
