Following an upgrade programme, the terminal reached an annual capacity of 8.2 million tonnes in 2021, with a draft at the quay of-15.4 metres. Operational excellence has encouraged more Cape-sized vessels to call, with TCM loading close to 150,000 tonnes per shipment. Loading 750,000 to 850,000 tonnes a month is now routine for TCM, which in September 2021 achieved its highest 24-hour loading rate and a monthly record of around 1 million tonnes. The next stage of upgrading the terminal is the replacement of handling equipment, new storm water channels and a truck offloading station conveyor linked to the existing infrastructure. However, much depends on improving the rail connections to and from the facility, which are currently a pinch-point for the operation, and the reason why sizeable volumes of coal still arrive at TCM by road.To ramp-up the switch onto rail, Grindrod is working with CFM - Mozambique Ports and Railways and Transnet Freight Rail – the South African rail operator – to upgrade track, wagon and locomotive bulk-haul capacity on the Ressano Garcia Line. Grindrod is also partnering with Eswatini Rail and CFM on a coal “dry port” at Sidvokodvo, in the centre of Eswatini. Coal from numerous mines converges on the facility by truck, is stockpiled at the railhead, then loaded into rail wagons for the final leg to Maputo via the Goba Line.
