À data da sua conclusão a linha será capaz de lidar com comboios de carga que compreendem até 100 vagões rebocados por seis locomotivas e a operar a velocidades mais altas – actualmente a linha suporta comboios com 42 vagões, com um par de locomotivas. Existe também potencial futuro para ligações ao Malawi e à Zâmbia.O Corredor da Beira também engloba a mais antiga linha ferroviária de Moçambique, a linha de Machipanda, originalmente inaugurada em 1899, que liga as províncias de Sofala e Manica ao vizinho Zimbabwe.A linha com 317 km de comprimento é a única ligação por transporte ferroviário de mercadorias entre Harare e o Porto da Beira, passando via Machipanda, na fronteira de Moçambique com o Zimbabwe. The 575km-long Sena line connects the Port of Beira with the coal fields of Moatize in Tete province.Around 10 bulk trains a day run between Moatize and Beira and work is underway to increase the line’s capacity from the current 6.5 million tonnes to 20 million annual tonnes by 2016. On completion, the line will be able to handle freight trains comprising up to 100 wagons hauled by six locomotives and running at higher speeds – currently the line is handling 42-wagon trains with a pair of locomotives. There is also future potential for connections to Malawi and Zambia.The Beira Corridor also encompasses Mozambique’s oldest railway, the Machipanda line, originally opened in 1899 linking the provinces of Sofala and Manica to neighbouring Zimbabwe.The 317km-long route is the only rail freight connection between Harare and the Port of Beira, running via Machipanda on Mozambique’s border with Zimbabwe.
