Allowing that extra margin for growth is understandable given that the current facilities were running at 120% capacity a few years back, which made it challenging to load and discharge vessels and move cargoes around the port.To further facilitate smooth operations, the Loan One phase will also build a new four-lane access road in the south side of the port. At the moment, Gate 1 – the main access to the town – can become congested as about 250 trucks per day on average visit the port.Two gantry cranes will also arrive courtesy of the final Loan Two phase of development. According to Machado, this will make a massive difference to operations. “We currently have to rely on vessel gear with reachstackers and RTGs helping where possible,” he says.“But it means the port is limited to about 10 container moves per hour. With gantry cranes, planned to arrivein 2018, it will be possible to move up to 30 containers per hour, instantly tripling productivity and reducing vessel dwell time in the port.”In other areas, the Port of Nacala’s container facilities are well up to the job. There are actually 103 positions for reefer containers, the container port railway siding can accommodate 13 wagons plus 13, and there are two back-up generators to ensure the port can run 24/7, even during power shortages.
