Enhancement of the Container Terminal is on-going, the latest phase increasing the storage capacity for full dry containers to 13,000 TEUs and 144 reefer points – boosting annual capacity to more than 500,000 TEUs by 2020.storage facility is expected to be ready by mid-2015. Construction will also start on the port’s second CoalTerminal, provisionally named Terminal 13, with a capacity of 10 million tonnes a year.Opening in 2016 will be Phase 1 of the port’s new Fertilizer Terminal. With capacity to process 7,500 tons per day – four times the existing throughput – vessel turnaround times will be reduced from one week to three days.Starting in 2015 is the first phase of the port’s Multi- Purpose Terminal expansion. The project will be built in three phases and is expected to increase capacity by up to 200%. Serving the terminal will be a new 600m-long Multi-Purpose Quay, scheduled for completion by 2018, with design and construction supervision by international engineering specialist Royal HaskoningDHV.Plans are also in hand to double storage capacity at the Grain Terminal from 30,000 tonnes to 60,000 tonnes, streamlining vessel turnaround times and quadrupling discharge capacity to 8,000 tonnes daily.Longer term, CdM is also evaluating construction of dedicated terminals to handle sugar, sulphur, bio-fuels and ro-ro traffic – including cars, commercial vehicles and large industrial and agricultural plant.PORT OF BEIRA PROFILE & DIRECTORY 2015 | 2016
